Voice Disapproval of Trump’s Policies

By Umma Sultana’18

America just voted for a racist and sexist figure to represent us.  Thousands of people came to vote, and I was hoping Donald Trump wouldn’t win. I can’t believe we just voted for a person who thinks it’s okay to grab a woman by her genitals, just because he has money. He is someone who was against the LGBT community.

According to the Los Angeles Times don’t buy Trump’s flip-flop on marriage equality. LGBT rights are anything but safe in his White House, “He previously expressed his support for the First Amendment Defense Act, a piece of legislation that’s strikingly similar to anti-LGBT legislation passed in Indiana”. This shows that Mr. Trump is against letting people choose their sexual orientation or gender identity. What happened to our freedom? He violates human rights on a daily basis. We just voted for a person who called Mexicans “Rapists,” and has this dream of building a “wall”.

According to the N.Y. Times in the article Donald Trump plans to immediately deport 2 million to 3 million undocumented immigrants, “They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.” We just voted for someone who wants to ban Muslims from entering this country, even though many served and still serving in the military that protects and represents us. Many Americans believe that he’d be a good president just because he “speaks his mind”, is that really enough to qualify of him for being president? The question is how would he make America great again?

Mr. Trump is also against reproductive rights. According to the N.Y. Times Donald Trump appears to soften stance on immigration, but not on abortion, ” Mr. Trump repeated his promise to name a Supreme Court justice who opposed abortion rights and would help overturn the 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision”. This shows that he doesn’t want women to be granted rights over their own body. There can be many reasons why a woman wants to abort, who is he to judge?

According to the N.Y. Times article A Week of Whoppers from Donald Trump,  Mr. Trump was also dishonest about some things he said in the past.  In the article it states “He said he had publicly opposed the war in an Esquire interview ‘pretty quickly after the war started.’”, however it was proved that he said it more than a year after because in the article it stated “the Esquire interview appeared in the August 2004 edition, 17 months after the war began.” Do we really want a dishonest president?

Our new president-elect also has many lawsuits filed against him. According to USA Today Donald Trump: Three Decades 4,095 lawsuits, “In May, Trump Miami Resort Management LLC settled with 48 servers at his Miami golf resort over failing to pay overtime for a special event.” These lawsuits imply that Mr. Trump is unfair and unethical to his employees because they worked more, but didn’t get paid for it. In addition to that, the headline also implies that he has faced many lawsuits throughout his past years.  Will this affect how he leads America?

According to the Washington Post in the article Here’s why Trump is already waffling on Obamacare, “President-elect Donald Trump is already signaling that he might backpedal on his promise to repeal the Affordable Care Act, telling the Wall Street Journal Friday that he’d consider hanging onto popular Obamacare provisions”. This shows that Mr. Trump made promises to people that he would get rid of Obamacare before he even looked into it to see if it had anything of his interest, he jumped to conclusions without inquiring.

It’s too late now, this is who America voted for, and this is who is representing us for the next four years. Let’s all hope Mr. Trump doesn’t get affected or hold the same bad habits he had from his past.  We should watch him carefully and prepare to voice our disapproval if he tries to make changes that diminish our civil liberties.
