Boys Varsity baseball is getting into the swing of things this off-season with intense workouts.
The varsity baseball team works out five days a week, Tuesday through Saturday. Coach Saverio Nardone has specific workout plans for the team this off-season. Tuesday and Thursday are for lifting, which takes place in the weight room. Wednesday is yoga and Friday is speed and agility. On Saturdays the team works out in the gym to practice both hitting and pitching.
“The workouts are designed to get the best out of all of our players, from the freshmen to the seniors,” said Coach Nardone.
The Hornets were able to get an early start this off-season with the help of Coach Nardone. He was hired in January last year and the team did not have a lot of practice time. This year the team has been practicing from the end of September, and the team feels that they are better prepared.
“Last year I didn’t get the job until January so it took time to get to know everyone and get accustomed to the program, but now we have created a family atmosphere and everyone is ready to succeed,” said Mr. Nardone.
Nick Cardieri ’17 said, “This year everyone looks better than ever and I expect us to do big things during the season.”
The baseball team has high expectations this year and will have to overcome a tough schedule. The Hornets play some of the top teams in PSAL such as Tottenville, Grand Street, and Madison. Both Tottenville and Madison made it to the semi-finals last year. This season, the Hornets will play these three teams a total of five times.
“We have a lot to prove, but I think we can come out and beat Madison, Tottenville, and Grand Street this year,” said Bruno Bavaro ’16.
Despite this tough schedule, expect big things from the varsity baseball team.
