The pink ladies are coming! The drama department will present Grease as this year’s production. Grease tells the story of Sandy Olsson and Danny Zuko as they and their friends live out their senior year of high school.
Sandy will be played by Josephine Mammoliti ’18, the first freshman lead Ms. Bommarito ever cast.
“I had a little bit of a struggle with myself casting a freshman,” said Ms. Liz Bommarito, “But I couldn’t keep the role from her just because she’s a freshman.”
This year’s play features a double cast where actors share their roles. This, however only applies to the female lead. Dominique Krol ’15 was also cast for the role of Sandy. When rehearsals start, the second week of March, there will be a first cast rehearsal, and another with the second cast.
“I feel like there’s a lot of pressure on me because I’m a freshman,” said Mammoliti. “I feel like I need to step up my game.”
Although Mammoliti has three years of experience from middle school, she is still nervous about her Midwood debut. Not only is she anxious about delivering, but she also wants to prove she is just as good, if not better than her junior and senior counterparts.
“I’m kind of nervous playing someone who has to have a boyfriend, since I have no experience like that before,” said Mammoliti.
Krol also has previous experience when it comes to performing. She has worked as a professional singer and has music available on iTunes and is a part of SING. She also is Midwood’s go to girl for singing the national anthem at sporting events.
This year Ms. Bommarito teaches two theater classes, whereas in previous years she taught only one. She says it’s a wonderful thing to see. They haven’t started working on the play yet, but the students are learning how to act, breathe, and perform to the best of their abilities. They’re using class time to understand the motivation behind the lines and why their characters act the way they do.
Many song favorites will be included in the play. So, watch out for Sandy, Grease, and You’re the one that I want.
Overall, the play takes six to ten months of preparation. Students put in a lot of time after school and during weekends since they only have a semester to put the show together, and this time is crucial.
With a Midwood Alumni, Didi Conn, who played Frechie in the original movie, many students believe they have to put their best foot forward.
Ms. Bommarito hopes to start auditions for next year’s production as early as May in hopes of saving time and she also has hopes of turning the theater class into a year long course.
While they wait for the auditorium to be free, SING is currently using the auditorium, Ms. Bommarito is working to get all paperwork involved complete.
